Year 8 Transition

Dear Parents/Carers and our new Year 8 pupils

At Newry High School we are proud of our Transition Programme, that allows our new Year 8 pupils to make the transition from primary to secondary education and most importantly settle in well to their new school.

We appreciate that for our new Year 8’s in September, they have not had the same experience as in other years. We want to reassure them, that we will be supporting them in every way we can and in no time at all they will feel part of the Newry High School family.

Meet the Year 8 Team

Hello to all our new Year 8 pupils. My name is Mr Strong and I will be your Head of Year. I have been teaching at Newry High School for 21 years! So, I really do know my way around. It’s a great school, with lots of opportunities for you all. We will ensure you feel welcome and that everyone makes new friends. My main teaching subject is French, but I also teach LLW, Religious Studies and P.E. I am passionate about sport and have played table-tennis for Northern Ireland and Ireland. I am really looking forward to meeting you and sharing in your new adventures at secondary school.

Hello, I am Mrs McLoughlin and I am a Year 8 Tutor. I have been at teacher at Newry High School for twelve years. I had no idea what I wanted to do after my A-levels (Journalism and Law were both on the cards), so I took a few years out and worked in various admin jobs. I then took off around the world for a year and decided on a boat in Thailand that I should go to university and become a teacher (I’ve been at NHS since I qualified). Unsurprisingly for an English teacher, I’m an avid reader and enjoy going to the theatre. I’m also a music fan and love nothing more than an outdoor gig or festival. I absolutely adore travelling and am happiest when I have a trip booked to look forward to. I am looking forward to meeting you all.

Hello all. My name is Mrs McGrath, I am a Year 8 Tutor. I have worked at Newry High School for seven years and I teach Home Economics and Health and Social Care. Unsurprisingly, I like to cook, and I've had lots of opportunity to try new recipes during lockdown which is great. I make cakes for my family and friends’ birthday's and other occasions when I have time. I've very recently taken a new interest in sewing and I like to get out for a long walk everyday if I can. I look forward to meeting all the new year 8 pupils soon.

Please find below links to guidance information sent to parents this June to support transition.

If parents or children have any queries, questions or concerns, please do email in and we will ensure we get in touch. We are hoping to be able to share with parents a plan for the reopening of school, once the DE and EA have confirmed.

Stay safe and enjoy your summer.

Best Wishes

Mrs Feeney
