In the department we aim to promote language awareness and communication skills, thereby enhancing literacy. Through language learning we explore social and cultural issues and promote personal development skills such as confidence, tolerance and empathy. The study of a modern language also develops thinking skills, encourages pupils to manage information, work with others, problem solve and fosters decision making.
In Years 8-10 pupils follow a programme of study based on the Northern Ireland Curriculum. Topics studied at KS3 include:-

There are three contexts for learning which provide plenty of variety and scope for investigating, understanding, describing, discussing and giving opinions. The contexts are:
Unit 1: Listening External written examination with stimulus material in French. 25% Foundation (35 mins approx.) Higher (45 mins approx.). Students answer 12 questions.
Unit 2: Speaking One teacher-conducted and externally marked speaking examination. 25% There is one tier of entry. The test lasts 7−12 minutes, plus 10 minutes of supervised preparation time.
Unit 3: Reading External written examination with stimulus material in French. 25% Foundation (50 mins) Higher (1 hour). Students answer 12 questions.
Unit 4: Writing External written examination. 25% Foundation (1 hour) Higher (1 hour 15 mins). Students answer four questions.

Careers using a language include teaching, tourism, government, marketing, financial services, IT, travel blogger, journalism and engineering. Also employment in a range of firms with European connections or in Europe itself.
