Our Department
The travel and Tourism department offers a very successful vocation option to our students who stay for A Level. The BTEC Level 3 Extended Certificate covers the key knowledge and practical skills required in the appropriate vocational sector. The BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma offers greater flexibility and a choice of emphasis through the optional units. In the first year you will gain an overall understanding of the travel and tourism industry. You will also look at UK and European travel destinations. You will develop your customer service skills, marketing experience and gain understanding of the overseas travel market. During the second year you will further develop your skills and investigate various travel organisations.
BTEC Level 3 National Extended Certificate in Travel and Tourism
Students will undertake the study of the Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Certificate in Travel and Tourism.
It is equivalent in size to one A Level, comprising 4 units of which 3 are mandatory and 2 are external.
Mandatory content (83%). External assessment (58%).
This qualification is designed to support learners who are interested in learning about the travel and tourism industry alongside other fields of study, with a view to progressing to a wide range of higher education courses, not necessarily in travel and tourism-related subjects. The qualification is designed to be taken as part of a programme of study that includes other appropriate BTEC Nationals or A Levels
The Department aims to deliver the subject using a variety of teaching techniques. These include: the use of ICT; fieldwork experience; research; ‘mystery solving;’ presentations; project work and kinesthetic activities. As part of the learning experience we also organise field trips so that students can experience the world around them.

Extra-Curricular Activities
Extra-curricular activities in Travel and Tourism include:
- An Annual trip to a Travel and Tourism Careers Fair
- Trip to Belfast City Airport to look at planning and disaster management
- Trip to Belfast, usually the Odyssey Pavilion or Titanic belfast to review their customer service and marketing strategies
Career Pathways
Students with a BTEC Extended Certificate in Travel and Tourism have access to a wide range of possible career and higher education opportunities. You learn and use a variety of transferable skills throughout the course. These include collecting, analysing and interpreting data, communicating your findings in different ways, and identifying and developing the links between different parts of the subject. These skills are in great demand and are recognised by employers and universities and colleges as being of great value.
