- 22 March 2017 | School / 50th Anniversary / Music
As part of the celebrations for the Golden Jubilee of Newry High School a concert was staged this week when students (past and present), parents and friends of the school community perform to a packed Town Hall.
Newry High School opened its doors in September 1966 and the ambitious programme was a celebration of musical performances and productions over the last fifty years. The wealth of talent from all eras of the school’s history on show was phenomenal and the enjoyment of the audience was very evident in the amount of laughter throughout the programme and the positive comments received when the evening reached its conclusion. Past pupils commented on the atmosphere of the evening as well as during the rehearsals and some said that it was an experience they would never forget.
Behind the production was a small army who worked tirelessly to ensure a performance of the highest standard led by Musical Director Julieann Hawthorne. The school principal, Mr I. Brown reported that " We are exceptionally proud of the fact that every job in the production from lighting and sound to stage management was led by the students and supported by the teaching and technical staff in school and in the Town Hall. Our students, both past and present, did a fantastic job tonight-a job that epitomises the unique and special school that Newry High School is. It was an experience those involved with will never forget."
The evening was superbly compered by former pupils and Newry's very own Ant and Dec, Gavin McCullough and Conor Smyth who held everything together and kept the laughs coming.
This very special event in the life of the school was a great opportunity for our entire community to marvel at the talents of our past and present pupils who have worked so hard to make the evening possible.
Below are the performers on the evening and we hope the pictures give you a flavour of the evening, the talent, memories, nostalgia and enjoyment of the event.
